The stock market competition for 4A4 starts on Thursday September 15th.
To join the competition:
- Go to www.marketwatch.com/game and click on Join Now to create an account with MarketWatch.com
- Enter your school email address as the username.
- Enter a password that you will use to log into the site.
- Follow the instructions on the MarketWatch website
Once you have successfully created a user account with MarketWatch, log into the site and then click on Find a Game.
The name of the Game is TY Stock Market M1. Enter the game name in the Search box.
You will be asked for a password to join the game.
This has been sent to your Google Apps email account.
Now you are ready to start trading in stocks on the NYSE.
This is the link to log into the game each day. Add it to your favourites on your home computer.

Green Dragon – Regional Heats

Seven students in Second Year Business Studies entered this year’s Green Dragon Innovation Challenge.
This is an enterprise competition run by Agri Aware and sponsored by An Bord Bia and AIB to encourage students to come up with innovative products in the agricultural, environmental or food sectors.
Two teams and one individual entered this year’s challenge.
The Revival team (John Armstrong, Daniel Foy and Michael Loftus) completed a project on the growing of sugar beet in Ireland and developing an Irish sugar product for consumers. The Envirobriq team (James Gallagher, Ronan Roache and Conor Quinn) developed a briquette produced from waste paper and Karl Benson’s project involved a developing a website on health, fitness and nutrition for young people – 4 Youth Health.
The students worked very hard on their projects and made a presentation to a panel of three judges in the Connaught/Ulster Regional Heats in Sligo on March 2nd. The judges were very impressed with their innovative ideas and the standard of their presentations.
The Envirobriq team are now through to the National Final to be held in Croke Park on Saturday March 26th.
Team Revival and Karl are going to continue working on their products.

Manchester United – the next Liverpool?

Manchester United today announced its results for the last financial year.
While we all read about the high level of debt in the club, it’s not all bad news:
- It made an Operating Profit of £1oom – the first English club to do so.
- Turnover increased to £286m per annum. Manchester City’s turnover is £125m.
- The club has £165m in cash.
However, all is not as it seems:
- Wages increased by 7% to £132m per annum.
- The level of debt has actually increased since last year.
- The club made an overall loss of £83.6m. This is the amount of money the club lost after paying the interest on its debt. The club must pay at least £40m every year in interest to its lenders.
- The club owes over £769m in total.
So, do you think Manchester United could end up like Liverpool?
