With the recent publicity surrounding the theft of laptops from bank employees and lost CD’s in the post, data protection has become an extremely important issue for business.
Under the Data Protection Acts 1988 & 2003, you have the right to:
- Access data stored on file or on computer about you
- Correct inaccurate data
- Seek compensation for mistakes caused by inaccurate data
The Data Protection Commissioner also deals with complaints from members of the public. Here are some examples of recent cases.
An example of the importance of checking the accuracy of personal data is in the case of credit ratings. All financial institutions share information concerning customer’s credit ratings. If a bank had inaccurate data about your credit history, then this may result in you being charged a higher rate of interest on a loan or being turned down for a loan by another bank.
You can check you credit rating by contacting the Irish Credit Bureau.
