VSE Stock Competition Winner

Well done to Kevin Gilroy on winning the school’s first online stock competition. The competition ended on New Year’s Eve.

Kevin made a total profit of $344,467.65 – an excellent return considering 2008 was the third worst year in the history of the New York stock market. Not as bad as 1931 though:

The competition only allowed you to trade in US shares. 85 students took part in the competition and over half beat the stock market i.e. their percentage return was better than the fall in the stock market. So there are some very good traders in St. Gerald’s.

Here are the Top 3 traders:

Ranking Username Net Worth Total Return
1 Kevin Gilroy $1,344,467.65 +34.45%
2 Benedikt Daschner $1,180,651.05 +18.07%
3 Thomas $1,070,545.50 +7.05%

There will be another competition starting soon with some prizes. Details will be posted on the blog.

Post your comments if you have any suggestions on how to improve the next competition.

TY Stock Competition Winners – Module 2

Well done to Damian Kopyto and Peter Gordon in the VSE Competition.

Damian is the overall winner with a total return of 11.5% and Peter is the top trader from 4A6 with a total return of 0.96%.

Ciolan Mellotte (+4.5%) and Cian O’Brien (+2.54%) were second and third respectively.

Of the thirty-five who took part in the competition, fifteen achieved a return greater than the market. The DJIA actually fell by 1.81% during our competition, so if you made a return better than -1.81%, you have “beaten the market“.

TY Stock Competition – Profit & Loss

StockbrokersWell done to all the TY students from 4A3 & 4A6 who took part in the Module 1 Stock Competition.

In this module, we used the Virtual Stock Exchange to trade in stocks on the NYSE. Each student started with $1,000,000 and had to build a portfolio of stocks over a four week period.

Ryan was the overall winner with a final profit of $117, 631. Shane from 4A3 was second (+$114,637) and Jack was the top trader from 4A6 with a total profit of $83,791.

How well did both classes do overall?

In order to assess how well each trader did, you have to compare the return on each portfolio to the “market return” i.e. how did the DJIA do over the term of the competition.

During our competition, the Dow Jones increased by 0.61%. Just under half  of all students in the competition achieved a return greater than +0.61%.

Over half of all students beat the market return.

That’s a very good performance.

We will be starting a school-wide competition in January 2010 with some prizes to be won.
